Thurles Gaels 2017 St. Patricks Day Parade

We had a great turn out for our St. Patricks Day Parade. Sadly the weather didn’t allow us to clearly display our float. With the theme of this years Thurles St Patricks Day Parade “Sporting Hero’s” We represented all twenty of the hero’s in the Tipperary Star recent poll to find Tipperary’s Greatest ever Sports Person. This was made possible thanks to the kids, their parents for kitting them out, Philomena McNamara for making their signs & other props and of course Catherine & Seamus of Thurles Sawmills for the transport. Thanks also to Secretary Aisling, Assistant Secretary Sara & Phil for decorating the float they dutifully delegated Frankie, Seamus & Morgan to achieve the end result which did the club proud.

Again in keeping with the Parade’s Theme, “Sporting Hero’s” we had a hard job of deciding on who to represent the three clubs that came together to form our club.
Billy Quinn, Rahealty was Captain of Tipperary’s 1953 Minor winning team. He won two minor All-Irelands in ’52’ & ’53’. A few lean years at Senior didn’t help Billy before he moved away ending his hurling for Rahealty & Tipperary. When he moved back to Irelnad he played with Faughs in Dublin to such a standard he represented Dublin at senior level before a rule change. Of course Billy’s son Niall Quinn went on to represent Dublin in Gaelic Football at minor level before becoming one Ireland’s most iconic soccer players.

Sean Russell, Thurles Fennelly’s was honoured in 2015 with a ‘Sean Geal’ Award for his service to GAA in the Cathedral Town. Sean also played for Kickham’s lining out in ’62’ to win a County No.1 Junior Title (Intermediate). He then hurled for many years with the Fennelly’s winning two Mid No.2 Titles before becoming one of the most important cogs in the Fennelly’s machine taking up vital officer positions within the club across three decades.

Jackie Lanigan, Thurles Kickhams, Jackie was on that No.1 Junior Title winning team in 1962. That success brought Jackie & team mate PJ Grace to the attention of County selectors. Both not only helped Tipperary to claim the Title in ’63’, but when injury stopped PJ from carrying out his duties as Captain, Jackie had the honour of walking the steps to lift the Munster & All-Ireland trophies for Tipperary. Like Sean Russell, the Bohernanve boys joined the reformed Thurles Fennelly’s were they had great success.

To cap it all off we had Adrian Mc Ginley Winner of a European Indoor Masters 4 x 400m Relay medal. Adrian was master of our ceremony. Sadly for him he was out staged by our brilliant young Gaels, led by young Brody Donoghue they sang all the way around. It’s true they do love Hurling & Football too. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

St Patricks Day Parade

Sporting hero’s was the theme of our float and the big work put in by Phil, Sara and Aisling really stood out many thanks to all the kids that took part. The Club would like to thank Morgan Seamus and Frankie on their decorating skills putting great work into getting the float right for the day. We would like to thank Seamus and Catherine for providing the transport on the day. Special mention to Brody Donoghue who lead the chorus to warm up the dampen crowd.
